Sculpture has the function not to only glorify but to examine. By questioning the human presence in its scale and through its gesture and by the process of casting that extended any interpretation it started from the point that had marked the uppermost limit of the sculpture: the perfect likeness. But it was able to transcend that likeness and give it new meaning by stylization and a fresh use of the space surrounding the figure. The space into which the figure penetrated is again an illusion but stimulated environment, constructed by real objects. I have dealt with people of the soil in this new series of work titled "Endless Journey". These human figures are pre occupied and carry their own experience, but their cloths and appurtenances tie them to a moment in history. I try to bring out the hardness and flow of appearances; and the fabric around which we wrap the body and soul. People should reach out and touch what's in it, in doing so they would move from periphery to center of the sculpture. The fragility of human form and ornamentation. The crafted human figures draw the viewer into a game of ambiguities. The duality of this strong and fragile relationship is explored in both materials and subject matter. -AJINKYA CHAULKAR
